Vision
The ministry of Culture’s design policy
France is an attractive territory for design, thanks to the many actors who form a solid network and boost the ecosystem (shared practice workshops, schools, associations…). The French high school education offer in design is rich and diversified, with nearly 150 design diplomas awarded in France. The designers trained in these schools are sought after by the largest international companies.
Visibility
The ministry of Culture wishes to offer a better visibility to French design abroad. This is why it wanted to support the designers, schools, institutions, publishers and companies present in Milan during the most important design week in Europe, through a coordinated communication operation. This operation, carried out with the Institut Français and in partnership with Business France, combines the Ameublement français and French Design by VIA (Valorisation de l’Innovation dans l’Ameublement).
The ministry of Culture’s policy in favour of design is based on several actions:
Research
To make easier the investments, to support the creation and the design research.
The French ministry of Culture has a supervisory authority over the Institut de financement du cinéma et des industries culturelles (IFCIC), which supports design publishers through its offer of loans and bank guarantees.
Nearly 4,000 students are trained in one of the thirty ministry of Culture’s high schools of art and design, spread throughout France.
In addition, the ministry also supports the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne, the Agora du Design association, which awards research grants, the Design Parade festival at Villa Noailles and the Biennale de design graphique du Signe in Chaumont.
In the end, Lille Métropole (Northern France) was elected as World Design Capital 2020 by the World Design Organization. Many public and private actors will participate in this international event.
Promote
For several years, the heritage design collections have been enriched, preserved and presented to the public with the help of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, the National Museum of Modern Art Centre Pompidou, the Mobilier National, the Cité de la Céramique – Sèvres et Limoges, the Fonds Régionaux d’Art Contemporain (FRAC), the Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques (CIRVA) in Marseille and the Centre de recherche sur les arts du feu et de la terre (CRAFT) in Limoges. These institutions also make their technical skills and know-how available to designers.
In other countries
The ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the ministry of Culture are presenting a French section at the XXIIe International Design Triennial in Milan, from 1 March to 1 September 2019. The Institut français is the operator of the project and Catherine Geel, teacher, critic and design historian, is its curator.
